
It was in the early 90's and I was with my family visiting friends. I especially liked visiting these friends because their son owned a Nintendo Entertainment System. So did I, but he had much more games than I. That's how I remember it at least. This time he showed me a new game that just blew me away. The central characters were two snakes - Rattle and Roll. I don't think I got the joke. But the names didn't matter much to me, what mattered was the world they lived in. Because it was radically different from any other game I had seen. At first I couldn't steer the snakes at all, because this game had
three dimensions instead of the two in every other game I had ever played. It took me some time to grasp the whole concept that the snake could move not only to the left and right but also further or closer away from me. And just let me clarify that we are not talking full 3D here. It had a fixed-camera-isometric view. This was on a 8 bit platform after all. But still, amazing.

Besides the novelty of an extra dimension, it really was - and is - a great game. The concept of the game was that the snakes wanted to eat dots to make themselves longer - like snakes in games often do.
But there were so many great details, like the fact that these dots behaved differently on each stage. At some stage they might be bouncy and really hard to catch and at the water stage they were little dot-fish and so on. One power-up made the tongue of the snake longer so that it would be easier to catch the dots with it. If you fell into the water (which I often did, again - I wasn't so good at steering) a Jaws-inspired tune would start playing and then played faster and faster before the shark made his appearance and devoured a piece of your precious tail-made-of-dots. Snake Rattle'n'Roll - I'm not so surprised that they put a lot of effort into that. It's just one of those games that I will always remember with love.
